Vestry Corner ~ March 2024

February brought our St. James Parish family aspirational goals and joyful celebrations. We started the month with a fulfilling weekend with The Rev. Dr. James Hawkey, Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey and Mr. Martin Castledine, the Abbey’s Dean’s Verger. Thank you to the many hands and hearts who prepared for this visit. As St. James Parish prepares for our 300th anniversary in 2029, it was impactful to hear of our own origin and connection to England. What a gentle reminder that Christ is our one true thread throughout history, and across the ocean.

The following week, several members of our Parish represented St. James at the 141st Diocesan Convention. The Convention provides an opportunity to gather with our brothers and sister from around the Diocese of East Carolina and support the ongoing needs of the wider Episcopal church. For those who spent their weekend traveling for this event, thank you for your presence and involvement.

On Shrove Tuesday, our hearts were fed. Our youth served pancakes and led bingo as we prepared for the Lenten season. It was so wonderful to see many families together in Lee Parish Hall, and we hope you continue this annual tradition.

The Lenten season is now here, and as Christians we use this time to reflect, pray, and focus on our love of Jesus and the sacrifice that is approaching. Have you had a chance to join one of our Wednesday night Lenten programs? Please take time to look through the Grapevine, there are more events and offerings in March that we hope you can attend.

As Spring starts to show her face on the many corners of Wilmington, we are pleased to share with you that Mt. Lebanon Chapel is also preparing for our homecoming. Mt. Lebanon Chapel’s spring cleaning was completed with the installation of new matching pews, along with a modified lectern. We look forward to gathering at the Chapel in a few short months.

We pray that whatever this month brings you, that the Lord prepares your path and places many friends along your way. St. James Parish is here and we look forward to celebrating the miracle of Easter with you.
