Ways to Remember: 125th Anniversary of the Wilmington massacre
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the Wilmington massacre on Friday, November 10. There are several community events to learn more about the coup and its impacts on the Wilmington community that persist today as well as opportunities to engage in dialogue about how we as a community respond to this history and its impact, even today. Below is a list of such opportunities starting October 18 provided by the New Hanover County- Office of Diversity and Equity.
A couple of events to highlight on this list and beyond:
Wednesday, November 8:
- 6:30pm- Real Talk: Descendants in Dialogue at Beckwith Recital Hall in Cultural Arts Building
Friday, November 10:
- 9:45am- Multi-faith blessing at the site of the Daily Record (709 Church Street) hosted by St. Luke’s
- 3:30-5:30pm- “The Story of Joshua Halsey and his Descendants” hosted by St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 600 Grace Street
Saturday, November 11:
- 9:30am-12pm: Conversation Circle- a moderated, cross-racial conversation including descendants of the 1898 massacre focused on answering “What is ours to do now?” Boxed lunch will be provided. - 1:00-4:00pm: 1898 Symposium and Essay Contest at Williston Middle School- Will include panel discussion featuring Bishop William Barber II, Bertha Todd and others. Event is free.
